A Brief History of the Protection of Internally Displaced Persons: El Salvador as a Case Study

The number of internally displaced persons (IDPs) has grown enormously to over 50,000,000 persons. This panel will detail the international legal and operational framework for IDPs that has evolved over the last several decades, including best practices and gaps. It will also examine how refugees and IDPs fit into the forced migration landscape where many unprotected IDPs end up as people seeking asylum in other countries. We examine El Salvador as an example.
