Penn School of Nursing Reappoints "Inspiring" Villarruel

Antonia M. Villarruel, PhD, RN, FAAN, co-chair of the Future of Nursing: Campaign for Action Strategic Advisory Committee, was unanimously reappointed as dean of the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing, a role she has held since 2014. "Her leadership has been inspired and inspiring,” said Penn's president. Penn Nursing has been ranked the top nursing school in the world annually since 2017.

Congratulations to Lauran Hardin, MSN, CNL, FNAP, appointed by the U.S. Government Accountability Office to the Physician-Focused Payment Model Technical Advisory Committee. Hardan is senior adviser for partnership and technical assistance at the National Center for Complex Health and Social Needs (of which AARP is a founding sponsor).

Get Your Flu Shot! Say ANA, Rita Wilson in New Program

As flu season collides with COVID-19, it’s especially important that people get flu shots—especially the 200 million people over the age of 50 and those who have chronic health conditions. That’s why the American Nurses Association has teamed with actress Rita Wilson - who with husband Tom Hanks was among the first celebrity COVID cases - to create a national program called The Race to 200M.

“Reclaim Our Public Health Roots”: Nurse on Racism, COVID-19 

In a thoughtful Q&A with the American Journal of Nursing, Monica R. McLemore, PhD, RN, FAAN, speaks of skills and awareness that nurses need to confront racism in the time of COVID-19, and the need for the profession to take a leading role in these efforts. McLemore was a 2015 Camapaign Breakthrough Leader in Nursing.

Focusing on positive emotions—not just trying to reduce stress—can increase well-being, says an article in the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses’ June issue of Advanced Critical Care. Cultivating gratitude and staying in the present moment are among skills that can be tailored to health care workers to avoid burnout.

Virtual Summit “Reimagines” a More Equitable Future for All

AARP CEO Jo Ann Jenkins and former Secretary of State Colin Powell are among leaders from multiple industries speaking at a conference challenging our country’s systems and structures in light of COVID-19. The public is invited to AARP’s virtual summit, “Reimagining How We Invest in Health, Wealth, and Aging,” October 7–8, 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. ET each day.

Opinion Piece: “As Nursing Goes, So Goes Public Health” 

The public should be advocates for nursing so that nurses can continue being strong advocates for patients and families, write Antonia M. Villarruel, PhD, RN, FAAN, and Claire M. Fagin, PhD, RN, FAAN. In an opinion piece in The Hill, the leaders write that, in this Year of the Nurse, " as the pandemic spread … nurses ran toward the crisis, not away from it.”

People magazine surveyed parents, students, and more as schools begin to reopen for in-person classes during the pandemic. Among those interviewed is a Delaware school nurse: “I truly believe we’re prepared to handle it. We’ve been preparing all summer, and the key is to bring the children back safely.”

Among features: leading nursing organizations seek information from nurses and offer health suggestions, while trusted health authorities tell the public how to support nurses, and stay safe.

What do you as a nurse, group, or organization do to build trust between you and those you serve? Submit your stories and ideas to the Building Trust Initiative, a collaboration between the National Center for Complex Care and Needs and the American Board of Internal Medicine Foundation. Deadline: October 30.

Proposals Sought for Community Health Equity Program

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation’s Community Solutions for Health Equity program aims to elevate the voices and priorities of communities of color. RWJF seeks letters of intent, ideas that identify a community problem, and suggest how to partner with health care systems on a solution. Deadline: October 7, 3:30 p.m. ET.

Culture of Health Prize Open for Community Applications

Communities are invited to apply for the 2021 Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Culture of Health Prize. Applications need to demonstrate how nominated organizations are working to transform neighborhoods, schools, and businesses to create a Culture of Health. Informational webinar: August 6. Application deadline: October 15, 3 p.m. ET.

ANA Invites Nominations for Its Innovation Awards

The American Nurses Association seeks nominations for its Innovation Awards, which celebrate nurse-led innovations that improve patient safety and outcomes. The award monies go toward supporting translational research, development, prototyping, production, testing, and implementation for an innovative product, program, or project. Deadline: November 1.

Midcareer health professionals and behavioral and social scientists are encouraged to apply for the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Health Policy Fellows program, a yearlong learning experience in Washington, D.C., that seeks to build and maintain strong and diverse leadership and a workforce skilled in health policy. Deadline: November 9 at 3 p.m. ET.

Participate in Testing the Board Engagement Survey

Calling all registered nurses (RNs) and advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs): have you served for at least one year on a board of directors with fiduciary responsibilities? You may be eligible to participate in a study, approved by the University of Massachusetts Boston Institutional Review Board, to test an instrument aimed at measuring the engagement of nurses on boards. Take the survey and share this message with your RN and APRN colleagues. Deadline: December 31.
