It's been over five months since Wisconsin's legislature did anything. Coronavirus cases are spiking in Wisconsin and the state is on the brink of a major outbreak. The economy's been wrecked, hundreds of thousands of workers have lost their jobs, there's a huge backlog in processing unemployment compensation claims, renters are facing eviction, homeowners face foreclosure, the state budget is a mess. There are widespread and ongoing protests demanding action dealing with systemic racism. And state lawmakers do nothing. They don't even meet. They don't show up for work but still get paid their full salary. We're not taking this sitting down. We're taking it to the streets.
Wisconsin's legislature is doing its best Congress impersonation. With COVID-19 deaths passing the grim 200,000 mark, congressional leaders continue to be unable to reach agreement on a new relief package. They aren't working on reforming the tax system, even though it's now been made clear that you and I pay more taxes than the President of the United States. Hell, even undocumented immigrants pay more taxes than the president. But they sure are in a hurry to get a Supreme Court nominee confirmed. Recent precedent and public opinion be damned.
In recent weeks I've been half-jokingly telling family and friends that it seems like Mother Nature has had her fill of our political dysfunction and has decided to take matters into her own hands, unleashing a pandemic, raging wildfires on the west coast, one hurricane after another pounding our southern border, and who knows what next.
A longtime friend emailed me a note saying "you said that you felt Mother Nature was weighing in with her vote. Well, here you go..." and shared the link to this video with me.
This year has been a crazy one for sure. But in spite of all the madness, we're keeping our shoulder to the wheel and working to help our endorsed candidates and otherwise bring about change. If you've got some time to spare, we welcome your help.
