Hello John, It is with deep sadness that NPH remembers and honors John Stewart, chairman and founder of The John Stewart Company, JSCo, who passed away on September 5 after a long battle with cancer. We have lost a giant in our community, a person of great generosity toward NPH along with his wife Gussie, and a fierce proponent for the cause of affordable housing and progressive politics. He was warm, gracious, big hearted and will be dearly missed. |

John’s legacy lives on, through the eponymous Company he founded 42 years ago and the thousands of high-quality affordable housing units he helped produce and manage during a life very well lived. “Our company, affordable housing and the world has suffered a terrible loss with John’s passing… he had such a huge heart and sense of humor, only matched by his intelligence, height and passion for affordable housing – he was big in every way,” said Jack Gardner, President & CEO of JSCo (only the second President in the Company’s 42-year history). “He set the tone for our work, was unbelievably fun to work with, and we are all heartbroken about his passing. But we are determined and proud to carry on his legacy of providing beautiful affordable housing for those who need it the most. John’s was a life very well lived, and we will always carry his spirit within us.” John Stewart served on the NPH Board of Directors from 2007 - 2012, and then continued to host fundraisers with Gussie as a passionate advocate, anchor and friend to NPH. You can read his obituary of his extraordinary accomplishments, life and leadership here. The John Stewart Company has also created a page where we can all share our memories of John; please feel free to visit and share your photos, memories and stories! We'll have a chance to remember him further at our NPH Virtual Fall Gala on Thursday, November 19. |
