John,
Every day domestic workers face low pay and abusive situations. These incredible women -- house cleaners, nannies, home care workers -- have no HR department to call, but they have us.
That's why we're so happy you've joined us at the National Domestic Workers Alliance.
Every new supporter strengthens us to fight for basic protections and better conditions for domestic workers -- and inspires us to take on the challenges our community faces, whether it's immigrant families being torn apart, the systematic silencing of women and people of color, or nationwide attempts to suppress the ability to vote.
To help us do this work -- and get you the most relevant updates -- we've got one quick question:
How would you describe yourself?
I'm a domestic worker -- (I work as a house cleaner, care worker for elderly or people with disabilities, or nanny -- or all 3!)
I employ a nanny, a house cleaner or a home health care worker
I'm none of the above
One of the reasons our work is so fundamentally important is that domestic work and domestic workers are almost entirely invisible.
At NDWA, we SEE and recognize this work and the women -- statistically it's almost always women, many women of color -- who do it. In a recent TED talk I tried to give an overview of how we tackle this challenge, and if you've got a minute I'd love for you to check it out:
We have big plans to transform the way we care in our country: for domestic workers, for immigrants, for women by organizing, advancing legislation, and building a movement.
We often share stories and breaking news on Facebook and Twitter first and we'd love you to follow us. If not -- stay tuned for more over email!
Talk soon,
Ai-jen Poo, Executive Director
