Friend,

I’ve spent four decades working in politics, learning all the ropes and the “rules,” both spoken and unspoken, of campaigns and candidates. But in the past 3 years, I’ve been unlearning all of them – Doug’s campaign is breaking all the rules.

There are some things that sitting Senators in closely-contested races are supposed to do. They’re supposed to distance themselves from their party’s presidential candidate, court voters based on strategy, and avoid making statements on hot issues of the day.

Doug Jones has done none of this – he spoke on behalf of Biden and unity at the DNC, he’s never diluted his opinions to court voters, and he’s heralded, not shied away from, the conversations we’re having around the country about justice. Doug has never once compromised his values or the interests of Alabamians for politics or personal gain.

Doug isn’t just breaking the rules of politics, he’s changing them. He’s showing us that politics in the South – and the country – no longer follow the formulas we’ve been using. The pundits can no longer conclude that you have to alienate Black voters in order to appeal to white voters in the South, nor that you must be hostile towards those on the other side of the aisle if you want to appease those on your own in Washington.

Doug’s campaign is showing us that the lines that have historically divided our politics and our senses of community are blurring.

Nate Silver’s 538 has listed us among this year’s closest Senate races, along with Iowa, Montana, Michigan, South Carolina and others. I know that all of these races have been affected by what we showed was possible in 2017, and what we’re going to do again in November. Because breaking the rules is working – our race is in a virtual dead heat.

Winning wasn’t easy in 2017, and it won’t be this time. It’s going to take all of us coming together. Will you help Doug prove to the country that the old rules that divided our politics are gone? Rush a donation before our major deadline in 2 days >>

To changing the rules,

Joe Trippi
Senior Adviser
Doug Jones for Senate
