A note on the Speech from the Throne from your Green Party Caucus: Hi Friend, Justin Trudeau and the Liberals presented their Throne Speech last Wednesday. The speech laid out the government’s priorities and asked for our confidence in their administration. Their plan for “a stronger and more resilient Canada” is commendable but Greens know all too well that nice words are hollow without action. We are glad to know that the Liberals are working to help Canadians through this crisis with CERB replacement programs and by improving COVID testing but we can’t help but feel like they’re missing the big picture. We want to be optimistic. The Liberals have put the right words on paper:
But if this sounds familiar to you, that’s because it is. This Liberal government has made these promises before and failed to act. Greens have called out hollow promises before. We will never abandon the demands of science. Our caucus will press for assurance that this Speech from the Throne is more than empty words. With three MPs, in the last year we have pushed and achieved more real change than any of the larger parties. We were so disappointed that the NDP never even mentioned climate in their bottom line for supporting the Liberals. But, then again, they know they cannot afford an election. Opportunism trumps principle in other parties. In just five days, we will elect a new leader of the Green Party of Canada. (Reminder, please vote!) We must press the hopeful message offered only by Greens. That’s why your support of the Green Breakthrough Fund is absolutely crucial. We will need our next Leader in the House of Commons with us and we need your help to get he-she-or them elected. Support the Green Breakthrough Fund Ambitious climate targets, listening to science, ending subsidies to fossil fuels, banning fracking – these are the steps we must take for our climate, our health and our survival. And with a donation today you can make sure that our new Leader will have the resources needed to build the Green Party of the future – YOUR Green Party.
