YOU MATTER

The already staggering number of veteran suicides has increased 20% during the pandemic according to senior military officials in a recent report. At Boot Campaign we have seen and heard first hand how financial duress, social isolation, adjustments to routine and challenging times have made circumstances even more difficult for the veteran population.
Our YOU MATTER campaign had two goals:
1. Get as many people as possible in the t-shirt to let veterans know: YOU MATTER; and
2. To raise funds for Boot Campaign’s Health and Wellness program for veterans seeking the care that they deserve

In the last month, we have received some powerful messages from veterans and veteran advocates who have joined the movement. Here is what they shared, in their own words:

“I personally have had dark times, done horrible things, and seen even worse. I have subscribed to a disciplined approach of suicide prevention. If you need a pick-me-up, go outside in the sun. Find a mountain and climb it. Find a lake and swim it. Make today a little better than yesterday, and a month from now it will be a lot better. It won’t happen overnight but the byproduct of this lifestyle is never falling to the demons calling to us by name and a level of happiness that doesn’t exist any other way.”
— Tim Kennedy, UFC Fighter & Green Beret

"I have often said that as horrific as the pain was from losing Aaron, I can't even fathom what it would have felt like to lose him this way. Unthinkable."
— Karen Vaughn, Gold Star Mother & Veteran Advocate

“If you've read my book #AlwaysASoldier, you know that I struggled with this issue earlier in life.”
— Rob Smith, Iraq Veteran & Author

“Suicide isn’t just a veterans issue, but unfortunately it’s an issue that affects veterans severely. This struck close to me in 2011 when my best friend took his own life. I wish more organizations and efforts were around back then.”
— Joey Jones, United States Marine Corps EOD
