ACLU Supporter, we just wanted to make sure you saw our email to help stop the SCOTUS vote – because the window we have before the Senate moves on this critical issue is short. Rushing the Supreme Court Justice nomination process is a threat to the Court's legitimacy – and will impact our civil liberties for generations. Now is the time to raise our voices as loud as possible: Please, tell the Senate to delay the vote now. |
Friend – President Trump nominated the next Supreme Court Justice this Saturday. And Senator Mitch McConnell has stated he will waste no time in preparing to rush the confirmation of any candidate through. But we want to be clear: There is no reason to expedite one of the most consequential decisions of our time. In this critical moment, we must all speak out and demand that our leaders fulfill the roles they were elected to do. Start now by sending a message to your senator urging them to delay any SCOTUS confirmation process until after the inauguration. We don't have to tell you the power a Supreme Court Justice holds on our democracy. They will shape civil rights and civil liberties legislation for generations: from reproductive freedom to racial justice to LGBTQ rights to immigrants' rights to our most fundamental right to vote. Filling this significant role must not be hurried. But it's going to take all of us raising our voices now to move the Senate off its current course: Join the growing cries of dissent across the country and send a message to your senator urging them to delay any confirmation hearing until after the inauguration.
Justice Ginsburg was a champion of civil rights and a leader for our country – from her time as a law school student to co-founding the Women's Rights Project at the ACLU to her years as a Supreme Court Justice. We must treat filling her seat with principle and legitimacy. In 2016, Sen. McConnell made it known that the vacancy created by the passing of Justice Scalia should not be filled until the election of a new president. He said, "The American people should have a voice in the selection of their next Supreme Court Justice." That was months before Election Day that year. We're now only 38 days until November 3rd, and in many states, the election is already underway. ACLU Supporter, we all deserve more than a rushed confirmation hearing in the final weeks of a presidential election. The voters deserve to be heard. That's why we must be relentless in telling the Senate exactly what their constituents demand from them right now: The confirmation must be delayed so that the Senate can do its duty and hold a meaningful, thorough confirmation process in the new term. Send a message directly to your senator and urge them to commit to this today. Thank you for taking action, Manar Waheed |
