*Español abajo* Dear GGJ Friends and Community, We join our members to express our collective outrage on the reports of the brutal violation of the bodily autonomy of migrant women at the Irwin County Detention Center, which operates under the authority of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Thanks to the courageous testimonies of
migrant women and the whistleblower complaint by Dawn Wooten, a nurse employed at a privately owned detention center, the world learned that high rates of hysterectomies were performed, some without consent, on migrant women. “This complete disregard for migrant women’s bodily integrity is a direct result of U.S. militarism, white supremacist, and xenophobic policies that are implemented systemically in immigration detention camps. We know young women have been sexually assaulted and then denied the right to have abortions in the same detention centers. As grassroots feminists, we call to abolish ICE, detention camps, and the punitive system that criminalizes and
tortures migrant women, Black, indigenous, and queer bodies for profit,” said Kitzia Esteva, Grassroots Feminisms’ National Organizer at GGJ. Grassroots Global Justice Alliance members across North America stand with Project South and join the call to shut down Irwin County Detention Center now!
