You and I were raised in an America where the freedom of speech was never q=

Instead, political correctness is the rule of law at schools like Tulane Un=
iversity, where cries of =E2=80=9Chate speech=E2=80=9D are the weapon used =
to silence and punish anyone with an undesirable opinion.=20

In fact, Tulane has proven that it=E2=80=99s more concerned about moderatin=
g hurt feelings than it is about students=E2=80=99 free speech rights.=20

Their internet policy requires students to =E2=80=9Ccommunicate only in way=
s that are kind and respectful=E2=80=9D -- and student activists are demand=
ing that the school implement a =E2=80=9Czero tolerance=E2=80=9D policy tha=
t would investigate and punish any students who are accused of =E2=80=9Chat=
e speech=E2=80=9D!

These aren=E2=80=99t the actions of an institution that cares about the int=
ellectual growth of its students. They=E2=80=99re the actions of an adminis=
tration kowtowing to the demands of an anti-intellectual mob!

Speech codes like the one at Tulane are stunting the intellectual growth of=
today=E2=80=99s college students with each passing day -- and we can see t=
he effects as we look around our towns and cities.

After four years in colleges that teach them that offensive speech can be =
=E2=80=9Cviolent=E2=80=9D or =E2=80=9Charmful,=E2=80=9D and then protect th=
em from challenging or even controversial ideas, millions of young minds ar=
e released into the world completely unprepared to cope with the rigors of =
adult life.

The result?

Night after night, mobs of mostly young adults riot, burn, and loot their o=
wn cities. They campaign for the defunding of local police departments. And=
, perhaps most alarming of all, they call for restrictions on all Americans=
=E2=80=99 First Amendment rights -- according to a 2019 poll, 51 percent of=
millennials support rewriting the First Amendment to reflect =E2=80=9Cthe =
cultural norms of today.=E2=80=9D

Where do you think they got that idea?

That=E2=80=99s right -- from policies just like the one at Tulane.

While Tulane=E2=80=99s policy is a nice code to live by, you and I know tha=
t expressing political opinions can too easily (and too conveniently) trigg=
er fragile students who advocate for censorship.=20

On the one hand, Tulane=E2=80=99s Social Media Guidelines state that it =E2=
=80=9Cencourages freedom of expression and recognizes the value of diverse =
opinions.=E2=80=9D On the other hand, its Code of Student Conduct bans =E2=
=80=9Charassment, intimidation, or cyberbullying=E2=80=9D and forbids stude=
nts from posting material that is =E2=80=9Chateful, defamatory or embarrass=
ing to anyone.=E2=80=9D=20

This is such a broad policy that anything could be perceived as bullying=E2=
=80=95 especially on social media. What about the use of humor, satire, or =
parody to make a point?=20

Without a clear definition of these terms, radical student activists on cam=
pus will be given too much power to shut down speech they disagree with.=20

And we all know where that leads.

Recently, bureaucrats at Tulane caved to student demands and postponed an o=
nline talk by author Edward Ball, whose book, Life of a Klansman, described=
his ancestor=E2=80=99s experience as a white supremacist =E2=80=93 a book =
that the New York Times lauded for its anti-racist message!=20

That could have been the start of a very important and needed dialogue on c=
ampus, but the university allowed just a handful of students to make that d=
ecision for the entire university. =20

=20

This madness must end. Now is our chance to draw a line in the sand and def=
end free speech from the advances of political correctness.

Let=E2=80=99s encourage Tulane University to fix its broken policies and st=
and firm for free expression and discourse on campus.

The future of freedom on college campuses is the future of freedom for us a=

Speech codes like the one at Tulane are stunting the intellectual growth of today’s college students with each passing day -- and we can see the effects as we look around our towns and cities.



After four years in colleges that teach them that offensive speech can be “violent” or “harmful,” and then protect them from challenging or even controversial ideas, millions of young minds are released into the world completely unprepared to cope with the rigors of adult life.



The result?



Night after night, mobs of mostly young adults riot, burn, and loot their own cities. They campaign for the defunding of local police departments. And, perhaps most alarming of all, they call for restrictions on all Americans’ First Amendment rights -- according to a 2019 poll, 51 percent of millennials support rewriting the First Amendment to reflect “the cultural norms of today.”



Where do you think they got that idea?



That’s right -- from policies just like the one at Tulane.

While Tulane’s policy is a nice code to live by, you and I know that expressing political opinions can too easily (and too conveniently) trigger fragile students who advocate for censorship.



On the one hand, Tulane’s Social Media Guidelines state that it “encourages freedom of expression and recognizes the value of diverse opinions.” On the other hand, its Code of Student Conduct bans “harassment, intimidation, or cyberbullying” and forbids students from posting material that is “hateful, defamatory or embarrassing to anyone.”



This is such a broad policy that anything could be perceived as bullying― especially on social media. What about the use of humor, satire, or parody to make a point?

Without a clear definition of these terms, radical student activists on campus will be given too much power to shut down speech they disagree with.



And we all know where that leads.



Recently, bureaucrats at Tulane caved to student demands and postponed an online talk by author Edward Ball, whose book, Life of a Klansman, described his ancestor’s experience as a white supremacist – a book that the New York Times lauded for its anti-racist message!



That could have been the start of a very important and needed dialogue on campus, but the university allowed just a handful of students to make that decision for the entire university.



This madness must end. Now is our chance to draw a line in the sand and defend free speech from the advances of political correctness.



Let’s encourage Tulane University to fix its broken policies and stand firm for free expression and discourse on campus.



The future of freedom on college campuses is the future of freedom for us all. Let’s defend it while there’s still time!
