Hi there,
“Will you commit to making sure there is a peaceful transferral of power after the election?”
“Well, we’re gonna have to see what happens.”
Donald Trump is openly threatening America with violence if he loses re-election. It’s not the first time he’s resorted to this vile tactic -- he warned us of “civil war” if he were removed from office during the impeachment process in 2019. Across the country, thousands of right-wing militia members mobilized in response to what they believed to be an order from their commander-in-chief -- and we’ll never know if they would have acted on it. But we do know that those diehard loyalists are still at the president's beck and call -- and Trump has already claimed that his supporters could “demand” he stay in office past his term limit.
We can beat Donald Trump. Peacefully, democratically, nonviolently. We can win in a Democratic landslide that forces Trump to leave the White House in disgrace. If Trump refuses to leave after losing, then -- as Joe Biden has said -- the military “will escort him from the White House with great dispatch.”
But none of that will happen if Trump wins in November; given Trump’s ego, the military will likely be hard at work throwing him a parade. The New York Times gives a sobering look at that possibility in its reporting, writing: “Trump will narrowly win re-election if the results differ from the current polls by as much (and in the same direction) as the 2016 results differed from the final polls.”
We must change the odds. We need a bigger advantage over the wannabe dictator in the Oval Office. We can’t see a repeat of 2016 -- the stakes are now so much higher.
You know that better than anyone.
