Dear John,

Last Chance for Animals (LCA) is happy to share the news that 30 Ringling Bros. elephants are moving to a sanctuary and out of the hands of Feld Entertainment, the parent company of the now-defunct Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus. The elephants will finally be free from the circus which held them captive for so many years. A sanctuary in Northeast Florida, White Oak Conservation, has purchased the elephants and is building a 2500-acre habitat in the heart of a 17,000-acre wildlife refuge. The Ringling elephants will roam unchained for the first time in their lives and be safe from abuse.

This news is a moment of great celebration for these amazing elephants. LCA vividly remembers the last Ringling show held with elephants on May 1, 2016 in Pennsylvania. Chris Derose was there leading the protest. After the performance, LCA, Chris and the protestors watched while the elephants were loaded into their truck and then followed them for hours as they made their way down the highway back to Florida one last time.
A year later, on May 21, 2017, in New York, LCA was at Ringling's final show, witnessing history as the circus closed its doors. Chris, along with other dedicated activists, held signs and stood vigil until the show was over and the last vehicle left the Coliseum parking lot. There were tears of joy as the Ringling circus shut off its lights for the final time. LCA, and the activists there, had been to well over a thousand circus demonstrations over the years. Now, knowing the elephants are finally free of Ringling Bros. has brought more tears of joy to thousands of people around the world.

This victory for Ringling's elephants is one of the most important in the history of American circus elephants. It brings us one giant step closer to the day when the last elephant from the last circus arrives at an elephant sanctuary. Until that day comes, LCA will continue to fight on behalf of the elephants!

For the animals,
