Welcome to Monday. President Donald Trump announces his Supreme Court pick. John Carr says he is backing Joe Biden. An up-close account of the trial of Cardinal George Pell is published.
The president's nomination of Judge Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court raises all sorts of issues, says NCR political columnist Michael Sean Winters.

"The decision to move forward with hearings and a vote, though undoubtedly within the constitutional prerogative of the president and Senate, reeks of hypocrisy so clearly, even I was taken aback," he writes.

The Republicans have the votes and there will be no stopping this nomination. Therefore, the Democrats should think long and hard about how they seek to obstruct it.

"They have a knack for shooting themselves in the foot, mistaking the mindset of their woke advisers and Twitter followers for the views of the American people," Winters says. "... Barrett's religion is already playing a central role in the debate about her nomination. While I am sympathetic to some of the concerns raised at Politico by theologian Massimo Faggioli about Barrett's involvement with the charismatic group People of Praise, Senate Democrats should be careful."

John Carr may not be a household name for most U.S. Catholics, but for a quarter century as the top policy advisor for the U.S. bishops, he's been a dominant force working on the Affordable Care Act, the church's response to the clergy abuse crisis and more.

Carr was there when the U.S. Catholic bishops updated their official voting guide ahead of the 2008 presidential election. One bishop suggested striking language from the document that named racism as an "intrinsic evil."

While Carr told NCR that the suggestion was made "in good faith" and sincere belief that the country had made serious progress on fighting racism, it's now that very issue that is one of the primary reasons Carr penned an essay saying there are "morally grave" reasons why he's voting for former Vice President Joe Biden over President Donald Trump.
