John,
It’s bad enough that in the middle of a pandemic that has killed more than 200,000 Americans and rising gun violence in a number of cities, Donald Trump prioritized this nomination above everything else.
It’s clear where President Trump’s priorities lie, and it’s not with the health and safety of the American people.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has said that he “couldn’t imagine” a Republican majority Senate confirming a Supreme Court nominee not endorsed by the NRA. That’s because even though the NRA has fallen further and further into disrepute in recent years, the gun lobby still has sway over far too many politicians in Washington.
The gun safety movement won two victories at the Supreme Court this year: in April, the Court declared New York State Rifle & Pistol Association v. City of New York moot, and in June, the Court declined to hear any of the new gun safety cases on its docket.
The stakes are high and the obstacles daunting, but we’re not giving up. Our attorneys are working day and night with other gun safety organizations to defend our progress and protect the safety of all Americans.
With gratitude,
Hannah
PS: Read the full memo we released earlier this week about how every gun safety law depends on the next Supreme Court justice.
