We’re proud to endorse Marilyn Strickland for Washington state’s 10th Congressional District. The former mayor of Tacoma, Marilyn would be both the first Black leader to represent Washington at the federal level and the first Korean American woman ever elected to Congress. A proponent of paid family leave, raising the minimum wage, and protecting workers’ rights, Marilyn is exactly the kind of representative Americans deserve to have in their corner during this unprecedented economic crisis.
But while Marilyn’s policies may be popular in Washington state, they are anything but popular in DC. While Marilyn is fighting for universal health care, Republicans are fighting to roll back the Affordable Care Act -- along with protections for patients with pre-existing conditions. While Marilyn is fighting for stronger public schools, Trump and Betsy DeVos are doing everything they can to siphon funds from our students and instead send taxpayer dollars to private, ultra-wealthy institutions. And while Marilyn is fighting for comprehensive immigration reform, the Trump administration is separating more families by the day.
We can push back against the GOP’s hateful agenda. We can elect leaders like Marilyn and ensure that, come 2021, the 117th Congress has enough progressive, diverse leaders to break the stranglehold of the GOP and make this country better for all of us.
But we’re not there yet -- in fact, House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy just unveiled a plan for the GOP to take back the House. POLITICO reports McCarthy will plan to “win over voters with broad calls for defeating the coronavirus, supporting law enforcement and rebuilding the battered U.S. economy.”
We can’t let the GOP lie their way to victory. We must make sure Americans get the truth -- and that candidates like Marilyn get into office. But right now, we’re falling hopelessly behind our grassroots fundraising goal -- and need another $1,672 by midnight if we want to make up the ground we need to get back in the game and get Marilyn and leaders like her to the Capitol.
