John,
On Friday, we learned that Donald Trump will nominate Amy Coney Barrett to fill Justice Ginsburg’s seat on the Supreme Court. Yesterday, he made the official announcement.
If you’ve already heard how she is all but guaranteed to eviscerate Roe v. Wade, I’ll cut straight to the chase. We need your donation today to ensure we can win big this year and safeguard our rights at the state level.
But if you need more convincing, here are some facts about the person Republicans want to appoint for life to the highest court in the land:
- She is 48 years old, meaning she could serve on the Court for 4+ decades (the last 4 justices to leave the Court were the following ages: Stevens - 90; Scalia - 79, Kennedy - 81, Ginsburg - 87).
- She has only been a judge for 3 years, having been nominated to the Seventh Circuit by Trump in 2017.
- In 2006, she told the Notre Dame graduating law school class, "Your legal career is but a means to an end, and... that end is building the kingdom of God.”
- In her short time on the bench, she has shown unabated hostility to abortion rights. Specifically, she voted to uphold law a law that required fetal remains to be buried or cremated, as well as a law requiring parents be notified when a girl under 18 is seeking an abortion even in situations in which she has asked a court to provide consent instead of her parents, as was permitted under existing law.
- She voted in favor of a policy that would deny legal permanent residency to immigrants that are deemed likely to require government assistance in the future.
Putting Amy Coney Barrett on the Court is all but certain to demolish hard-fought constitutional rights and protections, potentially setting the country back decades.
There is a way to protect ourselves from this disastrous future. In 5 weeks, we have the chance to win a tremendous amount of progressive power in states, where legislators can pass laws that safeguard our rights, and keep harmful policies from ever making their way into court in the first place.
The journey ahead will be difficult, and we will fight every step of the way. But there is always a way to make progress. Right now, this is it.
