I'm not usually this open with crucial campaign information, but I need you to know what's going on.

After our special election in May, we were out of money. We spent it all.

We had to start from scratch at a time when other campaigns had millions in the bank. We needed to build back up to take on Mike Garcia's corporate PAC donors in this general election, now just 37 days away.

Candidates in other races were able to raise and save their money through 2019 to spend it now, as voters begin to cast their ballots. We couldn't do that.

That means we've had to campaign twice as hard with less than half the time other House campaigns had to build their cash reserves.

Now we're down to the wire -- facing our most important finance deadline of this campaign, and we're not where we need to be -- not even close. Our average grassroots donation is just $22.44 -- can you pitch in that amount or more right now?

Here's the deal, John: This end-of-quarter deadline marks the final chance for our campaign to raise the money we need to win.

We need cash right now to keep our TV ads on the air, send mailers to voters, and ensure that every registered Democrat in the district returns their ballot by November 3rd -- and with a record number of registered voters in Ventura County, we'll have to spend more on voter contact than we planned.

But this time around we have less attention on our race and diminished resources, and since we won't take corporate PAC and D.C. lobbyist money (unlike Mike Garcia), it takes us longer to raise the funds we need.

We really are a campaign by and for people, and I couldn't be more proud of that. But it does mean that our campaign rises and falls based on whether or not we hit our end-of-quarter goal because it's harder for us to fill gaps when we fall short.
