Congratulating President Trump's Supreme Court Nominee
I congratulate Amy Coney Barrett on her nomination to our nation’s highest court, and I would like to commend President Trump on his excellent judgment in choosing this incredibly well-qualified nominee. Judge Barrett is an impeccable jurist and an extraordinarily thoughtful and principled woman committed to following our Constitution. I am also proud to see a New Orleans native who attended St. Catherine of Siena and Dominican High School as our next Supreme Court justice. I encourage the Senate to swiftly carry out a fair confirmation process that focuses on the qualifications of Judge Coney Barrett, and respects the dignity of the United States Supreme Court.
Fighting to Extend the Paycheck Protection Program
Congress appropriated $659 billion for the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) in the CARES Act and the Paycheck Protection Program and Health Care Enhancement Act. Evidence shows the PPP supported more than 51 million jobs across the country.
As of August 8, 2020, over 78,000 businesses in Louisiana received more than $7 billion in PPP funding to get back on their feet and keep employees on the payroll. Unfortunately, the SBA is no longer accepting PPP applications and $138 billion of the funds allocated by Congress for the PPP went unspent.
Republicans and Democrats both agree on the need for targeted relief for Americans suffering from the economic and health effects of the Coronavirus crisis, yet Speaker Nancy Pelosi refuses to bring serious legislation to the House Floor. This week, I joined my House Republican colleagues to take action through a discharge petition to force a vote extending unused funds in the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) to small businesses. I hope all of my colleagues in the House will come together in a bipartisan effort to save the manifestation of the American dream: our country's small businesses.

President Trump Takes Action to Protect Life
This week, President Trump signed an executive order protecting born-alive abortion survivors. I strongly applaud President Trump’s executive order taking further decisive action to protect life. In Congress, I’ve worked tirelessly with both Republicans and Democrats to get a vote on the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act. While Speaker Nancy Pelosi continues to block this life-saving legislation, President Trump has taken action, using his authority to ensure that the federal government prioritizes neonatal research, enforces legal protections for babies who are born alive, and strengthens notification and reporting requirements for hospitals.
While Congress still has a moral imperative to protect all born-alive infants from discrimination by passing the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act, President Trump’s actions are a strong step in ensuring that the federal government protects the most vulnerable American lives.
Remembering Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg
Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg was a tough fighter, battling cancer multiple times, while still playing a powerful role as a jurist on our Nation’s highest court. My prayers are with the family of Justice Ginsburg. I had the opportunity to attend her lying in state ceremony at the U.S. Capitol, which you can watch here.
