Hurricane Dorian update →
Dear Friend,
Everywhere we go, people are crying.
This morning, our team headed to the hard-hit Abaco Islands in the aftermath of Hurricane Dorian. I’ll be assessing needs in one of the damaged clinics and continuing to connect with partners. First, though, I wanted to give you an update.
To put it bluntly: I’ve never seen the level of trauma following a disaster that I’m seeing here.

The Abaco Islands are a scene of unimaginable devastation. Homes, businesses, and medical facilities are either flooded or flattened by the massive storm. In terms of lives lost, 20 people have been confirmed dead, but we expect that number to increase over the coming days.
Psychological needs are extreme, and many people can't access the medicine they need. Diabetes, for example, is common in the Bahamas, and without power to provide refrigeration, insulin will be in short supply.

The shipment that’s headed to the Abaco Islands today is just a start. We’re already working with the ministry of health to determine what medicines and supplies are most urgently needed, and partnering to obtain and deliver the most essential items.
When you think about the kind of flooding and destruction that the Abacos faced, everything in a flooded clinic would be unusable because of contamination. We’ve got to do everything we can to get medical facilities back up and running.
In coming days, we’ll be working to ease the burden on local health workers who were also impacted by the storm and addressing the urgent health needs of survivors.
We already have medical volunteers on the ground, and additional physicians, nurses, mental health professionals, and more are standing by to deploy. Jet Blue’s donating flights for our team and volunteers. Caring supporters are stepping up with donations.
