Trump just announced his Supreme Court nominee to replace Ruth Bader Ginsburg, and it’s as bad as we imagined.
Trump nominated Amy Coney Barrett to be the next Supreme Court Justice. Amy is a member of the Federalist Society, the conservative judicial organization that has been influential in Trump’s judicial picks, and was a member of Faculty of Life, an anti-abortion group, during her tenure as a law professor.
She has criticized the Affordable Care Act for requiring employers to provide contraception coverage in their health insurance plans, and leaders including Senator Feinstein have raised concerns as to whether she would be able to keep her religious beliefs separate from her application of the law.
Now that the nomination has been announced, there is a real danger that Mitch McConnell will push through a vote to confirm the nomination. If confirmed before the election, Barrett would have the opportunity to cast a deciding vote to strike down the ACA on November 10 — leading to millions of Americans potentially losing their health insurance in the middle of a pandemic.
The best way to fight this illegitimate nomination and send a clear message to Republicans is to elect Democrats who are ready to fight for important reforms to our institutions like the Supreme Court. That’s the work People First Future and I are focused on right now. Team, with less than 40 days left before Election Day, can I count on you to pitch in right now to help send that message and reach voters to get out the vote for Democrats?
We cannot afford a Trump-controlled Supreme Court or another disastrous four years under this president. So we need to do everything we can right now to fight back.
