This is a catastrophic threat to our most fundamental rights, Friend: Donald Trump just nominated Amy Coney Barrett to fill Justice Ginsburg's vacancy on the Supreme Court.

If the Senate confirms this right-wing, anti-choice judge to a lifetime appointment, it will cement a 6-3 conservative majority on the Supreme Court for generations to come. Roe v. Wade and the Affordable Care Act will likely be overturned. Healthcare, equal justice under the law, equal access to the polls, and more will be under constant attack with no highest authority left to protect them.

Voting has already begun in 11 states across the country. The American people are literally trying to have a voice as I write, and it is being denied them. This confirmation process lacks any shred of legitimacy, and I'm doing everything I can to fight back – but every single one of us shares the duty to speak out in a moment this critical. Republicans have made Supreme Court nominations a brazen power play – first by refusing to vote on President Obama's nomination of Merrick Garland. And now, by forcing Trump's nominee through the Senate a month before an election.

As a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, I've had a front-row seat to witness Donald Trump and Mitch McConnell chip away at the integrity of our courts with their endless stream of extremist judicial appointments. But I refuse to legitimize the broken, weaponized process of this latest confirmation process by meeting with any nominee put forward before the inauguration.
