What a difference four years makes. During the 2016 cycle, the GOP claimed their refusal to consider Merrick Garland was “about a principle, not a person.” This year, Republicans are abandoning any principles they may have once had and are rushing through a dangerous and unqualified nominee at any cost -- with many on the right even calling for eliminating the hearing portion of the proceedings entirely and skipping right to a vote.
Ballots are currently being cast against Donald Trump in states across the nation. Now more than ever, we must ensure progressives who will codify Roe v. Wade, protect the Affordable Care Act, and defend the rights of LGBTQ+ Americans take office in unprecedented numbers.
But Trump and the GOP are using this nomination to tighten their grips on the White House and on the Senate -- and are anticipating an energized base, a massive fundraising haul, and a chance to redefine the election on the heels of this announcement.
