Hi John --
Donald Trump just announced his far-right, anti-choice pick to replace Ruth Bader Ginsburg: Amy Coney Barrett.
Trump thinks by picking a woman, he can disguise his true aim: to finally give his far-right base what they've always wanted -- the complete dismantling of
Roe v. Wade and ultimately making abortion illegal.
The Senate is about to become ground zero in an all-out slugfest to honor RBG's dying wish that the winner of the November presidential election picks her successor.
But we can't just focus on the Senate as a means to protect RBG's legacy, Roe v. Wade, and our health care.
The anti-choice cases that keep making their way to the Supreme Court? Those start in the states.
If we want to stop Amy Coney Barrett, Trump, and Mitch McConnell from dismantling a century of progress, we need to win at the state and local level, too.
So, we wanted to reach out and remind you that we can cut the head off of the proverbial anti-choice snake by electing young progressives to state and local office. Help us close our $400,000 budget gap.
Some quick history for you, John:
-
Roe v. Wade was a 1973 case against an abortion ban passed by the Texas state legislature.
-
Whole Woman's Health v. Hellerstedt (2016) was a case against a Texas abortion law that caused more than half of the abortion clinics in the state to close before the Supreme Court overturned it.
-
June Medical Services, LLC v. Russo (2020) was about a law passed by the Louisiana state government that was a near clone of the Whole Woman's Health v. Hellerstedt case. But with Kavanaugh now on the court, anti-choicers hoped they could reverse precedent.
All these abortion bans, TRAP laws, mandatory ultrasounds, undue burdens -- they're all coming from THE STATES.
If you want to stop bad laws from going to the Supreme Court for a decision -- help close Run for Something's 2020 budget gap.
That way we can continue recruiting and supporting young progressives as they run to win sustainable, permanent power that stops attempts to overturn Roe at their source. Chip in $5 or more now >>
