In less than an hour, Trump is expected to announce Judge Amy Coney Barrett as his nominee for the U.S. Supreme Court to fill the seat vacated by Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg’s recent passing.
It couldn’t be a bigger slap in the face to progressives – or to RBG’s legacy.
We know a lot about Amy Coney Barrett and the threat she poses to progressive values. Groomed by the conservative movement for years now, Barrett checks all the boxes of a conservative wish list in serving on our nation’s highest court:
- Barrett sharply criticized the Supreme Court for upholding the ACA, that assures coverage for preexisting conditions, and wrote that the law's coverage requirements were unconstitutional.
- A Justice Barrett would jeopardize health care for MILLIONS of people amid a global pandemic!
- Barrett has signaled her open hostility to Roe v. Wade and has previously indicated her willingness to overturn the landmark ruling that expanded reproductive freedoms.
- In just two years on the federal bench, Barrett has accrued a record that raises alarms around issues of health care as well as racial equity, criminal justice, immigrants’ rights, gun safety reform, and the rights of working people.
- The list goes on!...
It’s not hard to see why this nominee is an insult to RBG’s legacy of ensuring fairness, equality, and justice for all.
Not only would it be precedent breaking for Senate Republicans to rush through a nominee so close to a presidential election, a vast majority of Americans (62%, including many Republicans) believe the next president should choose Ginsburg’s successor!
We know this is going to be an intense and difficult fight, but we cannot give up or concede ANY ground.
If Senate Republicans ram through a nominee like Amy Coney Barrett, we must be willing to make them pay dearly – by holding them accountable during the election to flip their senate majority and put a swift end to the national nightmare that has been the Trump presidency.
