John:
According to news reports, Trump is set to nominate Judge Amy Coney Barrett to replace Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg on the Supreme Court later today.
Whichever far-right judge he names, it won't be breaking news.
For decades, Republicans have been engaged in a project to consolidate their weakening grip on power through the courts instead of trying to win popular majorities. More and more, they are faced with a choice between THEIR power and OUR democracy — and they're making their choice clear.
What we need to do in response is also clear. We must demand that every senator use every tool at their disposal to stop this from coming to pass. We must ramp up pressure on Republican senators and make them pay a price at the polls. And we must do everything we can to mobilize progressives to turn out to vote.
There will be even more to do, of course. But as ever with Trump and his Republican enablers, our single most important task is to hand them a massive defeat at the polls over the next 38 days, remove Trump from the White House, and build a movement big enough to win the structural change we need to transform this country.
WFP organizers are on the ground right now in key states including Pennsylvania and Wisconsin mobilizing every single low-propensity voter we can. If we are able to raise $300,000 before next week's FEC deadline, we can expand this critical work:

The Republican push to win a generational far-right majority on the court is the last gasp of a party that has all but given up on gaining the legitimate consent of the people to govern.
They see the growing diversity of the nation just as we do. But rather than share power, they have determined that such a nation will never elect them with popular majorities.
Republicans have lost the popular vote in 6 out of the last 7 presidential elections. Yet over that time, they’ve appointed four far-right Supreme Court justices — stealing one seat by holding it open for over a year in 2016. Now they’re about to try and ram through another nominee to enshrine a 6-3 far-right majority.
With their current majority, they have chipped away at voting rights, abortion rights, gun safety, and heathcare, and ensured corporate dominance over our elections. They have gutted workers' rights and consumer protections, and struck down even modest local and state efforts at desegregation.
Now imagine worse.
Imagine a Supreme Court that ends the Affordable Care Act, and which will never say healthcare is a right. That overturns Roe v. Wade and denies voting rights entirely. That doesn't believe in a minimum wage and allows discrimination on the job. That upholds the harassment of immigrants. That continues the war being waged on Black lives by law enforcement. That prevents any action on the climate crisis already upon us.
We’ll throw everything we have to stop all of this from happening, and we hope you will too.
If you are in a position to do so, please make a contribution to WFP’s general election GOTV fund today. If we raise $300,000 by next week’s critical FEC deadline, we can mobilize low-propensity voters, remove Trump from the White House, and build a movement big enough to win the massive structural change we need to save our democracy.
