The ANSWER Coalition congratulates the emerging nationwide and
global movement against the repression of anti-racist organizers in
Denver for securing the release of Eliza Lucero, Joel Northam and
Lillian House from jail! We will continue to organize until District
Attorney Young ends his vendetta against protesters and drops the
bogus charges he is pressing against leaders of the movement for
justice for Elijah McClain.
Police agencies in the Denver area on September 17 arrested
anti-racist organizers in a coordinated assault. The police made the
arrests in a way to intimidate and terrorize people. People were
arrested in a Home Depot parking lot, at their homes, and after they
were pulled over while driving. Among those arrested were the leaders
of large-scale peaceful protests that have gone on for months
demanding justice for Elijah McClain. They are facing multiple felony
charges and years in prison in an obvious frame-up aimed at stopping
the movement for justice for Elijah McClain.
The release of Joel, Lillian and Eliza is a major victory for the
nationwide movement that has developed to fight back against the
frame-up on serious felony charges of Denver-area organizers leading
the fight against racist police brutality.
Over the past seven days, thousands of people have signed the petition, participated in solidarity
rallies across the country, added their name to the open letter of support,
and made generous donations to their defense.
Authorities grossly violated their legal rights by refusing to
bring the three activists up for a bail hearing. But they were finally
forced to relent under major legal and political pressure, and now all
three are out on bail.
