I wanted to make sure you saw my dad’s segment on MSNBC’s The ReidOut with Joy-Ann Reid last night.

Joy-Ann reminded us of our opponent Cindy Hyde-Smith’s most notorious quote: “If he invited me to a public hanging, I’d be on the front row” (I mean really, who says that??). Joy-Ann also asked my dad to talk about the #1 issue he’s hearing from people in Mississippi. No doubt about it, that #1 issue is health care.

As Mississippi continues to deal with the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s a reminder of how far behind Mississippi is when it comes to health care.

600,000 Mississippians have pre-existing conditions — yet our sitting Senator is intent on ripping health care coverage away from people. Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith supports repealing the Affordable Care Act and this administration’s lawsuit to overturn it.

Our state is one of the remaining states that still hasn’t passed Medicaid expansion. While our neighbors in Oklahoma and Missouri have successfully expanded Medicaid, Mississippians are still missing out on $1 billion annually in federal funding that would provide health care coverage to roughly a quarter million Mississippians. Without Medicaid expansion, eight rural hospitals have closed in the last eight years, and Mississippi ranks dead-last for health care outcomes in the country.

Let’s be clear: Senator Hyde-Smith wants to take Mississippi backwards and repeal our existing health care system. But my dad, Mike Espy, wants to improve it by building upon the ACA and finally expanding Medicaid so we can keep our hospitals open and help Mississippians afford the care they need.

My dad said it himself: If elected this November, he’ll be a health care senator through and through.
