Four years ago, Mitch McConnell and Senate Republicans set the precedent that a new Supreme Court justice should not be confirmed during an election year. That precedent was upheld to block President Obama’s nominee, Merrick Garland, from filling the vacancy left by the death of Justice Antonin Scalia in February 2016.
Yet this year, Mitch McConnell and Senate Republicans are on track to ram through confirmation of Trump’s likely nominee, Amy Coney Barrett, to fill the vacancy left by Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s passing – just days before Election Day.
The glaring hypocrisy in McConnell’s actions and lack of concern for upholding a precedent he himself set is distasteful and inappropriate behavior from an elected representative. The process should not change simply to serve a partisan agenda.
As your elected representative, I take my oath of office very seriously, and to break that oath and go back on one’s word is wholly unacceptable. It is my duty to serve you with your best interests in mind, not my own.
