** Familias Reunidas
Bond Program
------------------------------------------------------------

We share the wonderful news of Kals's release from detention through the Familias Reunidas Bond Program. He is a 25-year-old Mauritanian asylum seeker who spent 7 months in the Otay Mesa Detention Center. In fact, he spent an extra month in detention because there was a document, the release order, missing from his file. We are so happy that he is now free. Thank you all for your support.

Kals came to the United States running from slavery in his home country, and instead of welcoming him and providing refuge, he was subjected to detention for almost one year. His immigration bond was set much higher amount than many others; unfortunately this in common with migrants from African countries.

Our US justice system is broken. Learning that Former Officer Brett Atkins was given a $15,000 bail for the fatal shooting of Breonna Taylor breaks our heart because so many currently in immigration detention set at the same or a much higher amount. They are not murders. They are friends, neighbors, parents, siblings and children seeking protection.

Today, we were once again painfully reminded of the injustices driven by hate in this country and while we celebrate the freedom of Kals, our heart is with the family of Breonna Taylor.

Let us continue speaking out against injustices and the persecution of black, indigenous, and peoples of color. Let us not forget about the thousands currently in immigration prisons simply for seeking safety. Let's #FreeThemAll!

Again, we thank you for your support and ask you to continue to make sure our folks are #FreeAndAlive ([link removed][0]=AZWG_hRn5HLl2dX-ZtZppouDmZBSr-K0O7v1MsYxWwrBbuuHD5tD9a6Ts1w6i3_BIrSNKyBqQWlJ7HBQiGY_S-6A_eF57_fZp0DXyGuTAKPo-7a4-ahj-ltc69M2Tlgbo-GN0v0IExNoOSbERLyj5Wjut02DafX118k83yHmf8L5fZp7U5YKt5RJ234Fsqug96U&__tn__=*NK-R&utm_source=WEBSITE+COLLECTED+SIGN-UP+EMAIL+ADDRESSES&utm_campaign=9b53c8e2be-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2019_04_16_02_59_COPY_79&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_745731044b-9b53c8e2be-144596591&mc_cid=9b53c8e2be&mc_eid=[UNIQID]) .

** Water Drop
------------------------------------------------------------

Last weekend we did back-to-back days in the desert replenishing drop sites where supplies were consumed or taken for the remainder of the migrant's journey. The temperature was at 105°, compared to the120° of past weeks, so we were able to cover more area.

Thank you to everyone on our team for all the hard work, especially to those who committed to BOTH days! We were able to be efficient and help more migrants.

We are thankful for the ongoing support for our water drop program. Because of you we can continue to have a presence in the desert.

Thank you all for your patience. As soon as we can safely take new volunteers we will. For the meanwhile, sharing posts and making donations allow us to continue our work, and be efficient as possible.

** Call to Action
------------------------------------------------------------
Are you angry?
Angry that there’s kids in cages?
Angry about the 20th death confirmed in ICE custody?
Angry about ICE forcibly sterilizing women?
Angry that DACA recipients may be deported?
Angry at so many black lives lost?
Angry about so many things this year it seems like you’ve lost count?

We are too.

So we ask you to REGISTER TO VOTE. Take your anger and put it to good use. Use your voice and vote these senators out of office, and choose representation that does not support the current unjust and racist administration. We must do everything in our power to effect meaningful change, and do our part for those who cannot. We cannot allow this injustice and neglect to continue, we cannot allow any more lives lost.

** Green Cards for Kids
------------------------------------------------------------

With our new Green Cards for Kids program, we are so lucky to be able to work with immigration attorney Fabiola Navarro who will be representing these children.

It is crucial that we help these children as they have already suffered enough abuse, neglect and/or abandonment.

With your continued support, we can help pay for the legal representation these children deserve in this critical time of their lives.

House report: Medical neglect, falsified records harmed detained immigrants

The investigation by House Oversight and Reform Democrats examined government contractors running ICE detention centers

By Tanvi Misra

"Medical mismanagement and falsified records may have contributed to the deaths of immigrants held at for-profit detention centers that are run under contract with the federal government, according to a report released Thursday by the House Oversight and Reform Committee.

** The report ([link removed][UNIQID])
, based on a year-long investigation by Democratic committee staffers, recounts numerous examples of medical misdiagnoses, incomplete or incorrect treatment for chronic illnesses and “grossly negligent” responses to infectious diseases including hepatitis, tuberculosis, meningitis and HIV. It also notes severe delays in emergency response to strokes and heart attacks, negligent suicide watches and deficiencies in psychiatric care that led one detainee to self-mutilate."

I trust them to be able to look at the facts, but they're not able to do that right now." "

Cameroonian ICE Prisoner Who Was Subjected to Forced Sterilization Granted Humanitarian Release

In U.S. immigration news, Pauline Binam, a Cameroonian mother who says she was involuntarily sterilized while held at the privately owned Irwin County Detention Center in Georgia, has been granted humanitarian release. Binam’s attorney says Binam’s fallopian tube was removed without her knowledge by the same doctor who’s accused of performing forced hysterectomies on a number of other prisoners, and who is reportedly not a board-certified OB-GYN. Last week, Binam’s deportation was halted at the last minute after pressure from immigration rights advocates and members of Congress.
