President Trump just gutted protections for the Tongass National Forest, our world's largest intact temperate rainforest.

It's a reckless decision that undercuts a 20-year-old policy known as the "Roadless Rule," which stopped logging and the construction of roads in 58.5 million acres of undeveloped forest across the country.[1]

Environment Colorado and our national network won't stand by as the Trump administration threatens to clear-cut critical old-growth habitat and other wild forests for logging -- and we stand ready to sue to stop the destruction before it begins. Are you with us, Anonymous?

Allowing logging in the Tongass National Forest will exacerbate climate change and harm wildlife habitat.

The Tongass is a major carbon sink, meaning its trees soak up carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and mitigate global warming. As an old-growth forest, the Tongass' trees have been absorbing and storing carbon for centuries, helping to keep our planet cool.[2]

This national forest also provides critical habitat for wildlife, including wolves, mink, deer, and the largest population of nesting bald eagles. Logging the Tongass' dense, old-growth trees removes these animal species' food source and their thermal cover during Alaska's harsh winters.[3]

Protecting the Tongass National Forest is a responsibility Environment Colorado takes seriously, and one that we've embraced for decades.

Starting in the 1990s, our national network organized across the country in support of the Roadless Rule, which was adopted in 2001. Approximately 1.6 million people submitted comments to the U.S. Forest Service, urging the agency to adopt the strongest possible conservation rule. Nearly half of these comments -- 700,000 in all -- were a direct result of our grassroots efforts.

Each time the Roadless Rule and the environment it protects has come under threat, Environment Colorado has come to its defense. We've stood up in a packed hearing room in Washington, D.C., submitted thousands of public comments opposing logging projects, and supported legislation permanently protecting the Tongass.
