John,
Last night, amidst the protests and calls for justice against the Louisville police officers who murdered Breonna Taylor, Kentucky State Representative--and former Jobs With Justice Kentucky executive director--Attica Scott was arrested by police and charged with felony rioting.
Rep. Scott was attempting to enter a church, where other protesters sought sanctuary from police, when law enforcement surrounded and arrested Rep. Scott. Police claimed Rep. Scott was trying to set fire to a local library--a library that would not exist if it weren't for Rep. Scott's leadership and commitment to her community.
These outrageous actions by police cannot stand and it's why we're asking you to sign this petition right now calling on Kentucky Commonwealth Attorney Thomas Wise to drop the felony riot charges against Rep. Scott.
Rep. Scott is an incredible leader for her community, the city of Louisville, and the commonwealth of Kentucky. She has stood with working people--Black, brown, and white--throughout her time with Jobs With Justice Kentucky, on the Louisville Metro Council, and in the Kentucky State House of Representatives. Just weeks ago in the Kentucky State House, Rep. Scott authored a bill titled "Breonna's Law," which if passed would ban no-knock warrants, like the one that cost Breonna Taylor her life.
Last night, Rep. Scott continued to demonstrate her leadership as she joined protesters demanding justice for Breonna Taylor. Her courage and concern for her the people in her community was met with abhorrent action from Louisville police.
We at Jobs With Justice stand with Rep. Scott, the protesters in Louisville, and all those across our country demanding an end centuries of racial injustice and demand, loudly, boldly, and clearly that Black Lives Matter.
Sign the petition. Share the petition. Tell Commonwealth Attorney Thomas Wise to drop the charges against Rep. Scott.
Thank you for everything you do--especially in times of crisis.
In Solidarity,
Joel
