PULPITS & POLITICS Ep. 4: Should Christians Seek Elected Office?

marvel thumbnail pulpits.png

I'm pleased to share with you the fourth video in our PULPITS &
POLITICS video series about Christian political engagement.

We brought pastors together earlier this year to speak with one of our
elected officials (Rep. Jim Nash of Waconia) about what biblical
citizenship looks like. The resulting conversations became a series of
seven videos, which we're releasing one at a time for our supporters.

The fourth video features Pastor Judson Marvel from Good Shepherd
Presbyterian Church in Wayzata. The title is Should Christians Seek
Elected Office?
[link removed]

That's a question many people are asking - maybe you, maybe
someone in your family or in your church. In addition to discussing
what Christians should do in the political sphere besides just voting,
Pastor Marvel and Rep. Nash also discuss how Christians can live out
citizenship worthy of the gospel of Christ (Philippians 1:27) in the
political arena. Click here to watch the video

. If the video is helpful to you, FORWARD it to a friend or family
member! Over the next few weeks, we'll be sharing the rest of the
videos.

Just as a preview, here are the questions we'll be exploring over
the coming weeks:

* What are common misconceptions about politics and politicians?
* How is politics a calling for Christians?
* What is the cost of being a Christian politician?

Can't wait? You can view all the videos now on our website at

Transgender Bathroom Case Could Head to Supreme Court

Screenshot_2020-09-24+Free+Image+on+Pixabay+-+Wall,+Brick,+C

In 2015, a Virginia high school was sued for a policy maintaining
single-sex restrooms and locker rooms. Three years after graduation,
Gavin Grimm, a female student who announced before her sophomore year
that she identified as male, is still pursuing litigation against the
school board. The Gloucester County School board has stood their
ground in defending the policy. Following a loss in a federal court,
the school's most recent appeal

means that the case could make its way to the Supreme Court.

When Grimm first announced to school administrators that she
identified as male, they allowed her to use the restroom in the
nurse's office. Grimm complained that this was stigmatizing and
insisted on using the boys' restroom. When parents expressed
concern, the school adopted a policy that required students to use
restrooms and locker rooms corresponded with their biological sex,
while also making unisex, single-stall restrooms available to any
student who wished to use them. In response, Grimm sued with the help
of the American Civil Liberties Union, alleging that the school had
violated Title IX and discriminated against her on the basis of sex.
In 2017, the Supreme Court sent the case back to the lower courts,
leading to three more years of court battles. In the case's most
recent development, the 4th Circuit Court of Appeals ruled in favor of
Grimm, prompting the school to appeal for a full review of the case.

In their decision, the 4th Circuit Court cited the recent Bostock
decision, and  ACLU's James Esseks commented

, "We're using Bostock everywhere, just about, in all
these other contexts - education, health care, housing."
Justice Gorsuch wrote in the majority opinion for Bostock

that the ruling did not "purport to address bathrooms, locker
rooms, or anything else of the kind." As Minnesota Family
Council's Chief Counsel Renee Carlson noted at the time, the

Bostock ruling left many questions unanswered and invited further
lawsuits against people who affirm the reality of biological sex. The
continuing litigation against Gloucester County School Board is just
one example of this, and the school's request for a full review
makes it likely that the case could head to the Supreme Court,
especially considering the Court's insistence that

Bostock did not address bathrooms and locker rooms.

President Trump Announces Executive Order to Protect Abortion
Survivors

unnamed-1.jpg

On Wednesday, President Trump made an important announcement:
"I will be signing the born alive executive order to
assure that all precious babies born alive, no matter their
circumstances, receive the medical care that they deserve. This is our
sacrosanct moral duty." Since 2003, at least 300 babies have
been born alive after abortion, at least 143 of whom died shortly
after being born, many of deliberate neglect. Last year in Minnesota,
three babies were born alive after failed abortions and died shortly
after. This Executive Order will ensure that abortion survivors
receive proper, life-saving medical care, rather than being left to
die.

Pro-life lawmakers in Congress have made repeated efforts to pass the
Born-Alive Survivors Protection Act. In the House, Speaker Nancy
Pelosi has refused to take up a vote on the bill, and in the Senate,
it has received opposition from Vice Presidential candidate Kamala
Harris, and Senators Tina Smith and Amy Klobuchar, among others.

While the text for the Executive Order has not yet been released, the
President's announcement is encouraging for those of us who
believe in the inherent value of all human life. Vulnerable children
should not be left to die. It is horrific that we even need to debate
these kinds of basic protections, we are thrilled that President Trump
is taking action to protect abortion survivors!

Day of Prayer and Repentance TOMORROW

thumbnail_image002.png

Our nation is in need of repentance, and thankfully we have a God who
loves to hear us and forgive sins. Rep. Tim Miller (R-Prinsburg) and
Rep. Julie Sandstede (D-Hibbing) are organizing the upcoming National
Day of Repentance (tomorrow - Saturday, September 26) for just this
reason.

Did you catch that? A Democrat and a Republican are coming together
during election season to pray with us for God's mercy over sin,
including the sin of abortion. That's a big deal. We hope that this
event can transcend mere political affiliation and bring people of all
stripes together for prayer and supplication to God.

Why a Day of Repentance? Two simple reasons: our sin, and God's
promises. During this time of testing in our nation, we need to
approach the throne of grace. And when we approach God in repentance,
He hears and forgives. We take our inspiration from 2 Chronicles 7:14:
"For if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves
and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will
hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their
land."
