As a registered nurse and a brilliant leader in our movement, Bonnie
Castillo has used her platform of advocacy and collective action to bring
to light the many essential roles nurses play in our health care systems.

Bonnie’s work mobilizing nurses and health care workers across the country
has accelerated the urgent demand to provide optimal PPE and workplace
protections. Because of her passionate belief in protecting nurses and
patients, we are better able to act as advocates as we speak out on behalf
of our patients and our fellow nurses during the pandemic.

The throughline of Bonnie and NNU’s work has been our constant reference
to the precautionary principle. It’s the idea that we should be using the
highest levels of protection to ensure safety for patients and health care
providers as we face this novel coronavirus.

Bonnie’s organizing continues to amplify our message to major health care
influencers including the World Health Organization, the Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention, the Occupational Safety and Health
Administration, and many others.

She was among the first to recognize and call out the CDC’s transgressions
as they failed to apply scientific analysis to their recommendations about
Covid-19. Her courage and unwillingness to compromise nurses’ health and
safety continues to have a profound impact on the public’s understanding
of the pandemic.

NNU has gained many victories through Bonnie’s leadership, and this
recognition proves how much power nurses have when we join together on
behalf of our patients and our communities.

Our executive director, a strong voice for Medicare for All and social
movement unionism, earned a place on this prized list — which is a
reflection of the work we’ve all done together.
