Dear John,

Earlier this week, the Trudeau government delivered a Speech from the Throne to lay out the federal government’s agenda for the new Parliamentary session.

This was an opportunity for the government to address the state of federal finances, including the massive budget deficit and growing debt levels.

Unfortunately, that didn’t happen.

Instead, this throne speech puts Canada on track for bigger government, more spending, and more debt accumulation in the years ahead.

According to the speech, the government plans to:

create a national childcare system; introduce substantial “green” spending; expand the EI system; and, accelerate steps towards a universal pharmacare system.

These additional spending commitments will increase the size of government relative to the economy.

In other words, the federal government — not provinces, not entrepreneurs, businesses or investors — will play a larger role in allocating society’s resources.

And we simply do not have the money to pay for these programs.

That’s why the Liberals committed to finding ways to tax wealth in the Throne Speech. So much for Trudeau’s promise there will be no new taxes.

Put more bluntly – this Throne Speech did not address any of the serious fiscal issues facing Canada. Instead, it virtually guaranteed that things will get much worse.

John, as we move towards a federal budget, we’ll be providing Canadians with information they need to hold the federal government accountable.

As you might expect, we do not accept handouts from the government!
