Practical, pragmatic and sensible measures to protect from Covid

First Minister Arlene Foster commenting after discussions with Micheal Martin on restrictions within the Republic of Ireland.
First Minister Arlene Foster has encouraged people in Northern Ireland to respect restrictions put in place within the Republic of Ireland and not travel to Co Donegal.

Following a discussion with Taoiseach Micheal Martin she said she will continue to do all that is practical, pragmatic and sensible to protect people from Covid-19 and break the transmission of the virus.
The First Minister addresses viewers in Northern Ireland following the Prime Minister's UK-wide television address this week.
Following the Prime Minister's television address the First Minister also spoke to people in Northern Ireland about the continued threat of Covid-19.

The address came after new restrictions put in place by the Executive due to an increase in cases across Northern Ireland.

Since 6pm on Monday no mixing of households in private dwellings has been allowed.

There are exemptions to this rule for:
  • Bubbling with one other houseold
  • Caring responsibilites, including childcare
  • Building or maintenance work, or the sercices of any trade or profession.
  • Supported living arrangements
  • Visits for legal or medical purposes
  • A business operating from a person's home
  • A funeral
  • A house move and to undertake activities for that purpose
  • A marriage or civil partnership in a private dwelling where one partner is terminally ill.
No more than 6 people can gather in a private garden from no more than two households (not including children under 12).

  • First Minister Arlene Foster said events at a GAA match in Omagh raised serious issues for the Ulster Council of the GAA.

  • Economy Minister Diane Dodds addressed the AGM of the Northern Ireland Tourism Alliance and commended the sector on its response to Covid-19.
     
  • Education Minister Peter Weir launched an £11.2 million plan to provide additional teaching support for pupils, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds.
     
  • Lagan Valley MP Sir Jeffrey Donaldson gave a cautious welcome to the Winter Economy Plan announced by the Chancellor.
     
  • Paul Givan MLA called on the Minister of Justice to urgently investigate the actions leading to the sexual offence convictions of 15 individuals being recinded.
    He welcomed a commitment by the Minister to make a statement to the Assembly following a formal request by the Justice Committee.
     
  • DAERA Minister Edwin Poots confirmed that over 11,000 dairy, beef and sheep farm businesses have applied to his Department's Covid-19 Support Fund, resulting in claims worth almost £18.2million.
     
  • Upper Bann MP Carla Lockhart has written to the Communities Minister stating that marching/concert bands must be part of a forthcoming support package for the arts.
     
  • Economy Minister Diane Dodds announced skills and innovation support for social enterprises
