As the Democratic Majority Leader in the House of Representatives, I spend a lot of time working to elect Democrats to Congress -- and I spend a lot of time thinking about what exactly makes a good representative.

Today, I want to tell you just why I know that Christy Smith is the right leader for California's 25th district at this historic moment.

Christy knows that the fight for affordable, accessible health care is literally one of life and death. Her own mother, a nurse, died at the age of 67 because she couldn't afford the insulin she needed to stay healthy.

Christy knows that our children deserve the best quality public education -- she started out in politics by running for her local school board for just that reason.

And unlike her opponent, Christy knows that the coronavirus pandemic is real, and that if we are to get back to a new kind of normal, we must listen to our scientists and public health experts.
