Meet our intern Mariana

Environmental Champion,

My name is Mariana – I’m a community engagement and outreach intern here at WCV. I wanted to reach out now and share about some candidates I’m excited to support because ballots will be arriving to voters mailboxes in just 21 days! I'm advocating for these candidates because they understand the intersectionalities of environmental justice as it ties to issues of racial justice, education, and public health. Although these candidates may not be running for office in your community, they are on track to be decision makers in Olympia who will pass policy that impacts us all.

These three candidates are running in two different legislative districts in the South Sound area. T’wina Nobles is running for Senate in the 28th LD (South Tacoma, University Place, Lakewood, and Joint Base Lewis-McChord), and Joy Stanford and Carrie Hesch are running for State House in the 26th LD (Port Orchard through Gig Harbor). Both these districts are critical places to elect leaders who will stand up for the environment and health of their communities.

T’wina Nobles – State Senate, 28th LD

T’wina is a University Place School District Board Director, as well as the President and CEO of the Tacoma Urban League. Raised in a military family and educated to be a teacher, she is committed to making sure all children have access to education, keeping our communities healthy and safe, and investing in transportation. She understands that climate justice also means environmental and economic justice, that green jobs means good union jobs, and that we must make investments in our communities now to be resilient. If elected, T’wina would be only be the second Black State Senator in Washington state history and would be the only current Black State Senator. Her opponent is a longtime incumbent who recently scored just 8% on WCV’s environmental scorecard.

Joy Stanford – State House, 26th LD

Joy is a teacher and fierce advocate for the South Sound region. She has dedicated her career to working with underserved populations in her community and currently works in the non-profit sector for Shared Housing Services. As a community advocate, she understands that we need clean air and water, good jobs, and access to transportation and affordable housing. Joy’s opponent voted for the environment just 1 out of every 4 votes this past Legislative Session and is not fighting for the health of the 26th Legislative District.

Carrie Hesch – State House, 26th LD

Service to the communities is a core value for Carrie. She is a proud union member and services as Board Director for Key Peninsula Community Services. She knows the natural beauty of the district she would represent and vital need to invest in healthy forests, agriculture, and coastal lands. In the Legislature, she would continue to uphold the values of her community while fighting for public health and holding corporate polluters accountable. In addition to not voting for the environment and health of our communities, Carrie’s opponent has despicably shown up armed to intimidate youth in the community who are standing up for Black lives, aligned himself with far right extremists, and even mistreated his own staff members in Olympia.

Support Carrie by joining WCV’s phonebank on 9/26. [[link removed]]

I hope I get the chance to virtually meet you on a phonebank between now and the Nov 3rd general election!
