Dear John,
Government parties promised to publish a new, stronger Climate Bill within the first 100 days of the new administration. The Government will have reached that 100 day milestone in less than two weeks - on October 5th. As the clock ticks down on this deadline we need to hold the Government to account and make sure it publishes this Bill without delay. We also want to see the final Climate Bill signed into law by Christmas. Will you email your TDs asking them to do all they can to ensure the Dáil passes the Climate Law by Christmas?
I'll email my TDs now
We saw the power of legislation to hold the Government to account this summer when the Supreme Court struck down the Government’s incredibly weak 2017 Climate Action Plan because it didn’t comply with the provisions of the 2015 Climate Action Act. So this new Climate Bill is important - policy planning and parliamentary accountability must be put into law. However the Bill is just the first step on the road to the urgent climate action we need, and on its own, it won’t cut emissions. That’s why we're also calling on the Government to relaunch the national dialogue on climate action at the same time as publishing the Climate Bill. Will you email your TDs asking them to support our call for a climate bill by Christmas along with increased public participation and social dialogue on climate action?
I'll email my TDs
As TDs battle with competing demands there is a danger that the Climate Bill could be delayed. Lobbying by vested interests is a real risk too. However time and time again, we’ve seen that people power can push climate action further up the political agenda. Imagine how TDs will feel if their inboxes get flooded with emails asking them to support the Climate Bill without delay? It could be the final push the Dáil needs to pass a Climate Law by Christmas. Will you be part of it?
Yes I'll act today
Thanks for all you do.
