It is no secret that America’s health care system is the most expensive in the world thanks to the greed of the health insurance and pharmaceutical industries.

Even for people with health insurance, an unexpected illness, hospital visit, or ambulance ride can cause financial ruin.

Today in America, there is more than $81 billion in past-due medical debt. It is the leading cause of bankruptcy. And it’s time to get rid of it all.

When Wall Street wrote the 2005 Bankruptcy reform bill, it made it much harder to get rid of medical debt by imposing means tests and getting rid of fundamental consumer protections.

Wall Street’s bill also trapped families with medical debt in long-term poverty, mandated that they pay for credit counseling before filing for bankruptcy, and increased the need for expensive legal services when filing a case for medical bankruptcy.

When Bernie Sanders is president, that will fundamentally change.

We will cancel past-due medical debt, restore bankruptcy protections for people with medical debt, and make sure that no one’s credit is hurt by medical debt.
