Fires are raging in forests around the globe. You’ve probably seen the devastating photos of climate-fuelled wildfires in California. [1] But did you also hear about Argentina, Australia... and the Arctic? [2]   

 

Fires are quickly becoming a devastating symbol of the climate and nature crisis. 

 

And in the most important forest area of them all - the Amazon and other South American forests - fires have become such a predictable event that you can almost set your watch by it. Why? Because these fires are set deliberately as part of the destructive process of producing industrial meat. Areas of forest are slashed and burned and replaced with cattle farms and soya plantations. That same soya is used for animal feed on industrial farms here in the UK. 

 

Will you ask Tesco, to use their influence as the biggest seller of industrial meat in the UK to take real action on the Amazon fires?

This brutal system is accelerating climate change, harming Indigenous Peoples and risking future pandemics. [3] And last week David Attenborough’s documentary warned about the effects of industrial meat - particularly soya-fed chicken that we eat in the UK - on biodiversity too. [4]

 

Tesco have been aware of the impact of their business for years - and in 2010 they promised to remove deforestation from their supply chains, but so far, they have taken no meaningful action. Now they really must lead the way.

 

Please ask Tesco to take action in tackling the root causes of forest fires in the Amazon. 

Scientists say that this year we could be seeing the highest number of fires in the Amazon in a decade [5] - poisoning the air and affecting the health of thousands of Brazilians. [6] 

Companies like Tesco have a role to play in this disaster. Not only do they lead the supermarket sector here in the UK, they are also such big customers of the big industrial meat suppliers that when they talk, the meat industry listens. 

 

If thousands of us tell Tesco we want them to drop forest destroying meat companies, they’ll have to listen. Please remind Tesco of their power and responsibility by signing the petition.
