Over the course of our campaign, I’ve been disappointed by the various ways we have been silenced.

I’ve encountered consistent headwinds in the press. Outlets that have long relied on me for my issue expertise have declined to feature our campaign, even as I’ve become the first Democrat in a generation to face Nancy Pelosi in a general election.

When the press won’t hold accountable career politicians who duck debates, and then silence challengers who offer alternatives more aligned with our city’s proud values, we can’t pretend that an election is free or fair.

We did not submit a formal candidate statement to the official ballot guide that will be distributed to voters in the coming days for several reasons, including the prohibition on addressing the failures of the incumbent.

When we tried to put out a press statement, even commercial services that distribute press releases declined to do so, citing the inclusion of critical reflections on the incumbent’s voting record.

That’s all the more reason why we need your vote, and your support.

Pelosi‘s refusal to debate an opponent for over 30 years doesn’t just disrespect me and our campaign. It marginalizes voters, our city, and the democratic process. The systemic silencing of diverse voices skews our democracy, but I have faith in my neighbors across San Francisco to make intelligent choices, even if misinformed by corporate sources.
