Recently, a brave whistleblower came forward with to say that Facebook repeatedly ignored evidence discovered by their own internal Integrity Team of fake accounts influencing elections around the globe. Facebook’s response? Understate their influence, and blame the whistleblower. With our own election in 40 days right here in the United States, this should be concerning to us all.
We can’t afford a repeat of 2016 when a raft of misinformation about voting depressed turnout, and scared millions away from the ballot box. And that was before a deadly pandemic threatened the lives of millions, and lies about the safety of voting and dangers of the virus being promoted on Facebook. That’s why we’ve started a petition to tell Facebook they must take serious action and moderate their platform for this coming election.
Even Facebook’s employees are getting frustrated with the company’s lack of action -- digital walkouts, open confrontations with leadership, and doubts regarding the work they’re doing show how much influence Facebook has, and how acutely aware of it people are. That’s why it’s more important than ever that we turn up the pressure and tell Facebook to combat misinformation and protect our right to vote.
It’s crucial that those in charge of these platforms take the steps necessary to ensure the algorithm doesn’t play a larger role in this year's election than the people do. Voting is the building block of all our other rights. We MUST tell Facebook to empower people to vote by ensuring that only truthful information about voting is displayed on the platform. We cannot allow them to discourage voting by letting misinformation run rampant.
Thank you,
Nicole Gill
