Considerations for Students with Food Allergies The American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology (AAAAI) and National Association of School Nurses (NASN) have released Food Allergy and Anaphylaxis in School during COVID-19. This document contains considerations for school nurses as schools begin to re-open amid the COVID-19 pandemic with current recommendations for specific processes for students with food allergy to ensure safe school attendance. Improving School Community and Student Health International Clean Hands Week is This Week The Clean Hands Coalition began May 1, 2003, under the umbrella of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to create a portal for disseminating best practices in hand hygiene in the areas of food safety, healthcare, and public health. NASN Resources: NASN has created a series of educational videos on hygiene, including one on washing your hands, that can be used as a tool to educate the school community as they return-to-school during COVID-19. School nurses can download and share the videos, which are available in English and Spanish. Ask, Listen, Learn Launches New Cannabis Resources Although many children are spending more time at home, conversations about substance use prevention are as important as ever. The Foundation for Advancing Alcohol Responsibility and Ask, Listen, Learn are launching new resources as part of their underage drinking prevention program to help educators and parents talk with children about cannabis. New ACI Toolkit Provides Critical Cleaning, Hygiene Support for Schools As school systems across the country assess reopening plans, the American Cleaning Institute (ACI) unveiled a new toolkit of concise information on proper hygiene, cleaning and disinfecting protocols to help keep the school community healthy and safe. The materials are available through the Healthy Schools, Healthy People program, a collaboration of ACI and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), dedicated to supporting school systems nationwide with tools to help reinforce hand hygiene and cleaning practices in an effort to prevent the spread of infectious disease and reduce related absenteeism. Managing Chronic Health Conditions Online Skills-Based Program Helps School Nurses Apply Framework Skills-based Approach to Managing Chronic Health Conditions in Schools is an interactive program geared toward helping school nurses apply the NASN Framework for 21st Century School Nursing PracticeTM to the management of chronic health conditions in schools. The program is part of the CDC-funded NASN project Collaboration to Support Students with Chronic Health Conditions, and was originally an in-person program at the Healthy Schools Academy conference held at the CDC in Atlanta in February 2018. The course is available online and free for NASN members and non-members. LEARN MORE Downloadable Posters Highlight Chronic Conditions Students with chronic conditions are very vulnerable during the COVID-19 crisis. The deadline is October 31, 2020 at 11:59 p.m. ET. LEARN MORE NASN2021 Abstract Submissions Due By October 12 Submit Your NASN2021 Abstract Now! It's time to start planning for NASN2021! The NASN2021 Oral and Poster abstract submission form is officially open. Please note these important updates. Your submission will now include Knowledge Questions and Rationale. You will be asked about the possibility of presenting virtually. There will be ONE call for submissions instead of separate calls for oral and poster abstracts. The detailed guidelines in the submission form will explain these updates. If you have an abstract for a breakout, general or poster session, please consider submitting. Begin with the call for abstract submission details on NASN.org. NASN looks forward to receiving a diverse group of submissions to fill out the conference schedule. NOTE: If you were selected to present at NASN2020 but deferred to NASN2021, you will need to enter the submission platform to answer updated questions.
