A New York federal judge ruled the USPS must prioritize election mail and reverse Trump mega-donor Louis DeJoy’s policy changes, citing that “managerial failures” at the agency undermined America’s faith in mail-in voting.
This is a significant victory for democracy, but CNN reports that although DeJoy’s USPS has claimed delays have improved, the agency has still not returned to its pre-July levels -- and Americans have already started mailing in their ballots.
The likelihood of a “red mirage” -- a situation where Trump might appear to be in the lead before mail-in-ballots are counted and prematurely declare victory to silence the voices of millions of Americans -- is only growing. We can’t let that happen -- especially with 40% of Americans saying they will vote by mail this November.
Trump has already proven he’s trying to steal this election. And it’ll be that much easier to steal if inaccurate vote tallies make it look like he’s won on election night.
