Dear friend,

As your Comptroller, I’ve promised to use my platform to stand up for all Illinoisans against bullies. And right now, we have a big bully in the White House.

Illinois has been devastated by the COVID-19 pandemic and the corresponding economic recession. As your chief fiscal officer, I have a daily, insider view of our books. While Illinois faced severe financial challenges before this crisis, we were well on a path towards stable fiscal footing.

The pandemic, and the Trump administration’s lack of response, has put that path in jeopardy. I am advocating for the federal government to step in and approve an aid package to help states and local governments recover from the direct economic impact related to the Covid-19 pandemic. This would help to ward off draconian cuts to services and reduce looming budget deficits.

We're not asking for a handout. In fact, year after year, donor states like Illinois, Connecticut, and New York, have sent far more than their fair share of federal taxes to Washington to help fund dependent states like Kentucky and Alabama. It's only fair that the federal government reciprocate the financial help to Illinois now, when we need it more than ever. But Illinois is a proud blue state and President Trump has made it clear that he does not like or want to help "blue" states. Never mind that blue and red states are all part of the United States and we should all be in this together.

The truth is, I believe we will have a better chance of healing our nation if we can defeat Trump this November.

I urge you to join me in pushing for competent and compassionate leadership starting at the top, and at all levels of government, fighting for common sense, science based approaches to the pandemic, and advocating for responsible reforms to restore our economic outlook.

Can you help me continue my fight by chipping in just $20, $50, $100, $500, or more by September 30? [[link removed]] You can always count on me to be your truth-telling fiscal watchdog, and I would be honored to continue to have you by my side.

Thank you.
