"Someone who used whatever talent she had to do her work to the very best of her ability. And to help repair tears in her society, to make things a little better through the use of whatever ability she has. To do something, as my colleague David Souter would say, outside myself. 'Cause I've gotten much more satisfaction for the things that I've done for which I was not paid."

-US Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg on how she wanted to be remembered

As we remember Ruth Bader Ginsburg ([link removed]) and mark Constitution Day ([link removed]) , what does it mean for us to "help repair tears" in our society?

It's a question each of us has to answer for ourselves, in our own way. For me, it means working to bridge divides in our country, to reject false choices between right and left, and to sit in the tension of unanswered questions long enough to find new solutions--especially where we see the absence of justice ([link removed]) for American citizens like Breonna Taylor.

To no one's surprise--I like how Mark articulated his approach to running ([link removed]) for Congress: "I'm not afraid to go wherever the answers lead."

Listening to people with different perspectives is ultimately what we are here to do. It's why we're running a campaign for Congress in TX-24. That's why we launched an Advisory Board ([link removed]) , which gives us a formal structure to bring stakeholders together.

Mark talked about this approach in his elevator pitch video shared by Texas PBS, which is linked below.

If you're tired of the dysfunction too, join us. Work with us to repair tears in our society, to go where the answers lead.

Stay independent,

Caleb Paxton
Campaign Manager

PS: If you want to join the Advisory Board or our door-knocking team, write to us at info[@]bauerfortexas.com. We might be underdogs, but if voters are tired of the false choices the major parties offer, we might have a come-from-behind win just like the Cowboys. (You're going to want to see this video ([link removed]) clip from Sunday when we were filming with the game on in the background).

Transcript of Video:

Hi, my name’s Mark Bauer and I’m running for U.S. Congress in Texas District 24.

I’m running as an Independent because I’ve learned as a journalist for the last 10 years that neither party has a monopoly on the good ideas. And oftentimes our two-party system emphasizes more who we stand against rather than what ideas we stand for.

And so a major emphasis of my campaign is getting back to basics. Getting back to trying to understand one another, trying to understand why it is that we want the things that we want and trying to understand why it is that we do the things that we do. I think it’s a lot easier to try to work toward common solutions when we feel like we’re all operating on the same page.

And that’s not just political speak. That’s my bottomline. It’s how I’ve lived my life. I earned my journalism degree from the University of Texas at Arlington, where I learned to value truthfulness, integrity and transparency. I became a journalist in the first place out of my desire to serve my community and my campaign for Congress is a continuation of that desire.

I think a lot of the current political dysfunction that we see today is born out of false choice: us vs them, left vs right, Democrat vs Republican. And I think if we can learn to understand one another, we’ll find that we don’t have to settle for things like secure borders or a pathway to citizenship. We don’t have to settle for high testing standards and learning how to trust educators on how to most effectively teach in their classrooms. I don’t believe that we have to choose between workers’ rights and economic growth.

As a journalist, I’m trained to go where the answers lead. I’m trained to evolve and adapt based on new information that I’m taking in, and so I have no problem going back and forth between the political aisles in order to draft and support legislation that works for the economic prosperity of all North Texans.

And so if you believe as I do that a third way can work for our common good, I hope that you join me in supporting and spreading that message all the way up until Election Day in November.
