Dear John,

The Lords have struck a blow for British food standards.

But the battle for our food continues.

Food needs to be affordable and accessible as well as high quality. That’s why the Affordable Food Deal is fighting not just for high standards, but free and frictionless trade with Europe as well.

A no deal exit from Europe would see staple items like pasta, tinned tomatoes and beans go up in price by ten to twenty per cent.

It is ironic the government uses food security of Northern Ireland as excuse for the law-breaking Internal Market Bill. In reality, this Bill paves the way to a no deal, which will make our food less healthy and less affordable.

Sign the Affordable Food Deal pledge, and take a stand against food poverty, lowering British standards, and a no deal exit which would make us all worse off.

Shockingly, ten million people in the UK suffer food insecurity every year, and this figure is set to worsen dramatically as the furlough scheme comes to an end. Even small price increases to everyday items will push more people into food poverty.

Jack Monroe, food writer and anti-poverty campaigner, has written about the renewed need for an Affordable Food Deal: no one who has known hunger would allow it to spread like this. No one who has experienced food poverty would risk a no deal that would pull more families under.

You can read an excerpt from Jack’s piece on the Affordable Food Deal website here.

Sign the Affordable Food Deal petition to keep food accessible, healthy and affordable for all.

Keeping food standards high is important, but it’s not the end of the story.

Even if we keep our food healthy, it would be a betrayal of this nation to sit by while so many of our fellow citizens cannot afford it.

We are an island nation, and we must work with our neighbours, as well as domestic producers and British farmers, to ensure healthy, affordable food for all.

Best wishes,
