Donald Trump and Mitch McConnell are holding a dagger to democracy's heart, Friend.

No matter who Trump nominates to the Supreme Court to fill Justice Ginsburg's seat, Trump and McConnell's treacherous rush to force a vote before the election denies Americans their say. It risks breaking apart the Senate and the nation. It dangerously undermines our court system. And it despicably disregards Justice Ginsburg's dying wish for this decision to rest with the next president and the next Senate.

I spent three decades as a litigator and a prosecutor, and I've argued cases before the U.S. Supreme Court. So believe me: The legitimacy, credibility and trustworthiness of our highest court is at stake – which means our very democracy is at stake.

I am going to fight like hell to put a stop to this confirmation – but a fight this consequential will take each and every one of us giving it our all. Right now, Mitch McConnell should be focused entirely on passing the next coronavirus relief bill – on securing funding for better healthcare, more testing, aid for the families who are struggling to get food on the table and relief for the businesses trying to keep their doors open.

But instead, McConnell's top priority is railroading the nomination of a justice who would strike down preexisting conditions and overturn the Affordable Care Act in the middle of a pandemic. Don't take my word for it. Take it from the president himself, who said that Chief Justice Roberts "turned out to be an absolute disaster because he gave us Obamacare."

The American people deserve a say. With only 41 days until Election Day – and people already voting in states across the country – Mitch McConnell must face a groundswell of outrage.
