Amidst COVID-19, hurricanes, and wildfires people all across the country are finding new ways to get outdoors when access is changed or limited. But, even in non-crises times, many people don’t have easy access to nature. Years of racist practices, from red-lining to zoning to segregation, have made it difficult for all but the wealthy and white to access parks and outdoors spaces. The outdoors will not truly be for all until everyone can explore it safely and without fear of racism, prejudice, or bigotry.


Key findings from The Nature Gap highlight the racial and economic disparities when it comes to access to nature. Communities of color are three times more likely than white communities to live in a place that is nature deprived. Communities of color and low-income communities are more likely to suffer from health disparities and are the least likely to have access to open spaces where they can improve their health and wellness.

Nearby Nature . The Nearby Nature initiative supports local campaigns to advance equitable access to the outdoors at the state and local level. Each local campaign incorporates three elements: service projects and outings, leadership development, and advancing public policies and partnerships that serve to break down barriers to getting outdoors.


Together, we have a goal to raise $4,000 to support programs like Nearby Nature. You can sign up as an individual or create a fundraising team with friends and family to raise money together.
